4th Global Symposium on Health Services Research in Vancouver

Here are two pre-conference sessions which are of interest to workforce planning & research:

The WHO Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health: from high level policy commitment to collaborative mechanisms to advance implementation, a satellite session hosted by the World Health Organization, being held on Monday, November 14th (8:00 – 5:00).

This session will present state of the art evidence from the WHO Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health and the UN High Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth. This will be followed by a consultation to engage partners in the newly established Human Resources for Health Network. Presenters include Dr. Jim Campbell from the World Health Organization and Global Health Workforce Alliance, Dr. Edson Aruaujo from the World Bank, Dr. Gaetan LaFortune from the OECD, Dr. Srinath Reddy from the Public Health Foundation of India and Dr. David Weakliam from the Government of Ireland.

Methods for strengthening efforts in health systems and workforce planning to meet the health care needs of populations, a skills-building session organized by the WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre on Health Workforce Planning & Research, being held on Tuesday, November 15th (8:00 – 5:00).

During this interactive session, participants will learn more about needs-based health systems and workforce planning approaches and their applicability to building a health system that is responsive and sustainable. Participants will hear about the political and technical processes that need to be in place and some successful work in Zambia applying an integrated needs-based approach. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss the challenges and trade-offs faced when trying to plan in the long-term and together propose strategies for overcoming these. Chairing the session is Dr. Giorgio Cometto from the World Health Organization and Global Health Workforce Alliance. Our team of presenters include Dr. Gail Tomblin Murphy (Director), Dr. Stephen Birch (Senior Scholar) and Mr. Adrian MacKenzie (Doctoral Trainee) from the WHO/PAHO Collaborating Centre on Health Workforce Planning & Research located at Dalhousie University, Dr. Stephen Birch, Professor at McMaster University and Dr. Fastone Goma, Dean and Professor at the University of Zambia.
